Scout Finances

SE PatchI was sitting at lunch with extended family when my cousin told me that “Too many Scout executives make six figure salaries and contributions are wasted.”   I love my cousin, but those tired attacks on Scouting were more than I could take without responding. So we had a pointed discussion.

Elder Dane O. Leavitt, Area Seventy for Utah South Area of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and LDS-BSA Relationships Chair for the Utah National Parks Council, wrote a blog article “To Friends of Scouting in the Utah National Parks Council.” After you have read the article, you can see that the analysis of Utah National Parks Council (UNPC) finances suggests that we are doing a very good job managing the resources we are given. Our UNPC leadership team is conservative in our approach. We have a Council Treasurer and a volunteer CPA Budget chair who review finances. We have an annual full-blown audit from an outside CPA firm. Our Council Professional Scout Executive, Dave Pack, does make over six figures and he is responsible to run a multi-million budget and serve almost 90,000 Jamboree youthScouts. His salary is less than for those with comparable responsibilities in other organizations. Opponents of Scouting values love to criticize us. As a leader said recently, “Doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith.” We aren’t perfect, but I have first hand knowledge of how hard we work to be responsible stewards of your contributions to Scouting. As I read Stan Lockhart’s comments on the Scout office, his son’s experience, and Scout finances, I found them straightforward, timely and appropriate. We are grateful for your leadership and example, Stan.

I contributed to friends of scouting thru my LDS ward last year and was told I’d receive a receipt.
    So far I have Not.
    Please Advise.

I have sent your info over to the accounting department who should be able to get your receipt. Expect an email from them soon. Thanks!
