As a young Scout I treasured the camp-outs and anything that had to do with camping gear. My dad gave me my first backpack when I turned ten and entered in to Webelos. The backpack was from the Vietnam era and was produced for the military. It was solid, flat olive colored pack that was designed to be a one size-fits-all. I was big and tall for my age so the backpack fit me relatively well.
The backpack became a necessity for all of my outdoor adventures, whether I was camping or not. It went with me on day hikes, camp-outs, most field trips, army games with neighborhood friends, and at one time it served as a “Ghostbusters’ Proton-pack” with a vacuum hose and nozzle so I could belike Dr. Peter Venkman catching ghosts. My backpack became more than just a tool for outdoor camping and hiking—it became an integral part of my life.
Like many of us, my parents did their best to accommodate the needs of four children, and little did they know, especially my dad, that my backpack would set me on a course of outdoor adventure and a lifelong desire to go into the outdoors with a pack, tent, sleeping bag, food, water, and a drive to scale the highest mountains, explore the deepest ravines, trek through majestic forests, and experience a spiritual euphoria detached from the everyday grind.
So, this year, I’m going to update our family backpacks and camping gear. My first and only stop will be the at the place where I work, the Orem, Utah Scout Shop. This Friday, November 28th, The Boy Scouts of America’s Scouts Shops are participating in a “Black Friday” event! Many camping items and non-uniform apparel will be 25% off.
When you come make sure to tell me HI!
