The Social Media Certification has been designed for both youth and adults; with a focus on safety and finding your purpose in using social media, understand involvement with discussions, encourage everyone to share what is important to them, and flood the earth with good messages, especially in Scouting.
Now, I know what you are thinking, “Why is there a program on how to use social media? It’s not hard, all you do is post stuff.” Trust me, I thought the same thing. I expected to complete my certification within a week tops. I was wrong. I barely knew the functions within social media and I didn’t expect to discover what I did.
I started my certification about the same time I began working at Absolute Sheet Metal LLC as their Marketing Specialist. It couldn’t have worked out better if I tried. Though it was not Scout related, I applied the certification towards my job. The sheet metal company did not have any social media platforms and I became in charge of starting some up. I launched Facebook and Instagram. Thankfully, the Social Media Certification was there to counsel me on the platforms’ purpose, plan, layout, profile, and goals. Within 3 months we had over 125 followers and reached up to 200 people in a week. I was and am able to promote vintage car parts that we sell and where to buy them. I have held “call to action” posts that encourage people to interact with our pages, such as contests to win our apparel. Because I have followed the steps the certification offered and applied it to my work we were able to boost the popularity and credibility of our company.
I was originally hired on to do the eBay sales for Absolute Sheet Metal. After establishing our seller account I pitched to the owner of the company that we needed to get ourselves onto social media. The owner didn’t disagree, but he was more focused on getting our sales up on eBay and told me to hold off on doing it, (He’s not much into technology and really never saw the purpose of Facebook or any other network). I pestered him trying to explain that if we promote ourselves on social media we would get the sales he was looking for. Finally, I had some down time and began creating our profiles. After a few weeks with posting and sharing, the owner of the company saw the difference it made and was ecstatic. Now, he sends me pictures that he took and ask me to post them for him. The certification has turned a non-believer into a believer.
Lastly, the certification will show you how you can connect with others who have the same interests as you. Just recently I attended SEMA 2015, an automotive trade show located in Las Vegas, with the Absolute Sheet Metal crew. There, we got to meet some of the most famous automotive enthusiasts. I was sure to photograph and upload our interactions to Instagram and Facebook and used tagging/hash tags. One of the celebrities we got the meet was the cast of Counts Kustoms. We got their autograph and picture. I posted to our page and a few days later they reposted our picture and thanked us for stopping by. When Counts Kustoms did this, those who follow Counts Kustoms were exposed to our company and are now aware of our company and products.
Social Media has countless perks to help boost whatever it is you want to promote. I am grateful that I took the time to do the Social Media Certification. It gave me the foundation that I needed to market our company. It has reached out to those who are alike and has spiked interest in what we do. It has shown someone who didn’t care for social media, the greatness that it could offer. I encourage everyone to participate and complete the Social Media Certification. By doing it, you can make a positive impact in your company, family, organization, relationship, and the world.
