Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

Every year, people come together to help our youth. Parents encourage boys to gain merit badges. Employees implement safe camping experiences. Boys assist other boys with trials. Helping Scouts become honorable men is a group effort.

happy-scoutsThe Utah National Parks Council is really a team of thousands, and we want to thank you for your service.

The list of what each of you does goes on and on and on. So, we just wanted to take advantage of this Thanksgiving season to tell you all how much we appreciate the help.

To the parents, donors, volunteers, campers, Scout leaders, Cub Scout leaders, bishops, big brothers, dedicated Scouts, CEOs, sponsors, mayors, unpaid interns, and many more:

Thank you

Thank you for caring about these boys. Thank you for toiling in planning and execution without pay. Thank you for donating your hard-earned money. Thank you for coming up with ways for individuals to overcome challenges. Thank you for doing hard things and taking the time to be up at camp with exuberant boys. Thank you for your prayers and for your heart, mind, might, and strength.

Basically, thank you for making it all possible.

We posted this poem a few years ago, and we thought it’d be worth reading again.

A SCOUTER’S THANKSGIVING PRAYER

 With reverence in our hearts,

We, Your many children of many beliefs,

United in common purpose,

Gather to offer this our humble prayer,

In Thanksgiving:

As Scouters we are thankful for:

The many gifts and talents given to our fellow Scouters,

and to ourselves;

The freedom we have to join together and as a team

accomplish more than any of us could alone;

The opportunity to be of service to young people,

parents, other Scouters and our community;

 Our joy at seeing so many young people become excited

as they grow and are able to meet challenges;

Being reminded by their ceremonies and legends

that he who serves his fellows, is of his fellows greatest;

 And most importantly we are thankful for the gift

of knowing that our prayers are heard.

We each in own way take this moment to silently

add our own thanksgivings . . . (pause)

With thanks in our hearts we offer our prayers

and ask that You, the Great Scoutmaster of All Scouts,

be with each of us until we meet again.

AMEN

You all have done so much for the boys and our council. We hope you have a beautiful Thanksgiving!

From your friends,

    The last two lines of this prayer, with slight variation, was repeated by John Cross, a UNPC Camp Director in the 1950’s, at every campfire held at Maple Dell Scout Camp when I was a Scout. He called it the “Universal Scout Prayer.” It is one of my fondest Scout memories.

    A similar idea was recently stated by our Stake President, at our Stake “Fall Showcase.” He said “Never let the embers of a campfire fade away without taking the opportunity to bear testimony.” [As recorded in my notes. I have his verbal permission to quote him, but I’d need further permission to post his name on the web.]

    Our boys need this! Do it!
