Introducing the 2018 Religious Award: Title of Liberty

“The Scout in his promise undertakes to do his duty to his king and country only in the second place. His first duty is to God. There is a higher mission before us, namely the promotion of the kingdom of God. That is the rule of peace and goodwill on earth.” – Lord Baden-Powell

A focus on Duty to God is core in all camping programs within the Utah National Parks Council. This year, the camp religious award is focused on duty to God, duty to family, and duty to country.

This year’s award is the “Title of Liberty Award” and is a necklace containing a flag pole, a title of liberty flag (that swivels) and an attached banner with the words “Duty to God, Family, Country”.

The requirements are focused to help the individual better understand and implement their duty to God, service to their family, and support of their community and country. Groups can adjust the requirements to meet their desired outcomes and objectives. Click here for the list of suggested requirements.

The award will be available at all council camps with a price of $5. For those who would like to work on this award outside of a council camp, the awards may be purchased at the Orem Scout Office for $7 each or online.

We encourage all Scouting units and youth groups to incorporate the Title of Liberty Award and associated activities during your time at camp.

Can young women, who are not involved in Scouting, work on this and earn the award, or is it limited to registered Scouts?

    Two questions.
What is the writing on the flag part say?

Our district (NCAC) does not have this type of award? Can Scout outside of this district earn this?

Hi Norm! The flag says “IN MEMORY OF OUR GOD, OUR RELIGION, AND FREEDOM, AND OUR PEACE, OUR WIVES, AND OUR CHILDREN.” Anyone, including Scouts and leaders outside of the Council, can earn this award. The requirements can be found linked in the article and purchased here:

I am the Religious Emblems Coordinator for the Heart of America Council in Kansas City.

Can we use this program and purchase the awards for all faiths with a common syllabus?

Hi Don, you are more than welcome to use this program and award in your Council and tailor the requirements to a more non-denominational audience. If you need any help ordering, please contact Thanks!
