Introducing the Iron Rod Medallion Award

Click the image to download the suggested requirement flyer.

“And it came to pass that I beheld that the rod of iron, which my father had seen, was the word of God, which led to the fountain of living waters, or to the tree of life; which waters are a representation of the love of God; and I also beheld that the tree of life was a representation of the love of God.” – 1 Nephi 11:25

Scouts can earn the Iron Rod Medallion Award at summer Scout camp this year and in 2018. The Iron Rod Medallion’s purpose is to remind Scouts and others to hold fast to the word of God for guidance through this day and age.

This is also available for any type of group looking for a spiritual award to offer to its youth/adults.

Order yours here.

“If you hold to the rod, you can feel your way forward with the gift of the Holy Ghost, conferred upon you at the time you were confirmed a member of the Church. The Holy Ghost will comfort you. You will be able to feel the influence of angels, as Nephi did, and feel your way through life.” – President Boyd K. Packer, BYU Devotional, January 16, 2007

Every camping season, the Utah National Parks Council creates a special award focused on a Scout’s Duty to God. The medallion’s design is a hand grasping the iron rod with the engraving “Hold Fast Unto It” from 1 Nephi 15:24.

The award will be available for purchase at every camp trading post and at the Orem Office Outdoor Center/Trading Post after the young man or young woman has earned the award to their leader’s satisfaction. Scout Leaders should feel free to change the requirements to suit the desired outcomes set by the group or church organization leadership.

The award is $5 in camp and $7 if purchased at the Orem Outdoor Center/Trading Post or ordered online HERE. Quantity discounts are available.

I think it’s really cool that this LDS-oriented award is available. Where did the idea originally come from?

For the BSA LDS Scouting Centennial the folks at Symbol Arts showed us a steer skull award and we adopted it that summer. Prior to the we offered patches, but these medallion have been too popular to go back.

These are so cool. I loved the Liahona award. I hope every youth that goes to camp gets a change to earn this award!

What I personally love about these awards is that they are available for everyone and not just Scouts. Young women’s, activity days, adults, families, anyone can get this award and make a spiritual evening out of it.
