New Council Uniform Exchange Provides Cheaper Alternatives

Being the oldest of three boys, I was always the first to get a new Scout shirt. But, my brothers got my hand-me-downs since we couldn’t always afford a new uniform. My shirts were always one size too big, and I wore them till they were two sizes too small.

It was always like the Goldilocks story with my poor brothers; sometimes their shirts were too big, other times too small, and, once in a while, they actually fit. Luckily, for Scouts in the Utah National Parks Council, they don’t have to have this problem!

thumbnail_img_4868At our new Outdoor Center, located at the Orem Council Service Center, we will be starting a uniform exchange/buy-back where Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, and their leaders can exchange old, gently-used uniforms for uniforms that will fit them!

I know when my brother Sam went from Webelos to Boy Scouts my mom would have loved to have a way to get him a good looking uniform at a great price, (my other brother and I practically destroyed our shirts at summer camp by the time Sam was old enough for them). If we had this ability back then, my mom could have gone into the Outdoor Center and sold his Cub Scout shirt for $5.00 and then purchased a Boy Scout shirt for only $5.00 (with $5.00 credit applied), or she could have gotten a $5.00 credit towards any uniform in our Uniform Exchange or credit on her Adventure Card which can be used for camp/event registration, Jamboree, National Scout Shop purchases, etc.

Even better, uniform pieces can also be donated to the exchange as a tax deductible donation!thumbnail_img_4867

I am excited for the Outdoor Center to open this month, so Scouts and Scouters can be outfitted in a uniform for a fraction of the price, and have a place to recycle their used uniforms so that others Scouts can benefit from them as well.

So remember, come down to the Outdoor Center and pick up a gently-used Scout uniform. Shirts and Pants are each $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for youth; other uniform pieces (like patches or loops) will vary based on availability. You can also sell back or donate your gently-used uniforms for credit in the Outdoor Center towards a new (used) uniform!

UNIFORM EXCHANGE Purchase  Buy-back Credit
Shirt – Adult  $15.00  $7.00
Shirt – Youth  $10.00  $5.00
Pant – Adult  $15.00  $7.00
Pant  – Youth  $10.00  $5.00

Uniform Exchange Frequently Asked Questions

Can I exchange an adult uniform item for a youth uniform item (or vice versa)?

Yes, you can sell back any uniform item for credit towards any uniform item or another item in the Outdoor Center.

What if I want to exchange one size for another size?

Yes – we would buy back your wrong-sized item, and you use that credit towards buying the right-size.

Can I just donate old uniform items?

Yes, if you don’t want to purchase uniform items or get credit, you can still donate your old uniform! These donations are tax-deductible.

Do I need to exchange an old uniform item to buy something in the Uniform Exchange Program? Or, can I just come in and buy a used item?

No, you can purchase uniform items at the above listed prices without donating or selling a uniform item.

Can I sell my uniform for cash?

Uniforms can be sold for credit towards anything in the Outdoor Center. You can also get credit on your Adventure Card to use on camp/event registration, Jamboree, National Scout Shop purchases, etc.

Where is the Outdoor Center?

It is located at 748 N 1340 W (the Orem Service Center), right next to the National Scout Shop on the main floor.

When will this service be  available?

The service will be available beginning March 17 at the grand opening of the Outdoor Center and Trading Post.

What if you don’t have what I am looking for?

Uniform options are based on availability. This is a brand new program, and we are trying to build our inventory. Please encourage others to donate old uniforms. Hopefully, we will have what you’re looking for soon!

What condition does my uniform need to be in to sell to the council?

We want to offer good quality uniforms to our Scouts, so we will accept gently used uniform items, meaning no holes, tears, missing buttons, or major stains.

Do you have to be a member of the Utah National Parks Council to buy a shirt at the outdoor center?

This solves a lot of problems with helping kids to feel included when their parents don’t want to buy the uniform. I hope we are able to find a whole lot more people willing to donate old uniforms!!

Does the age or style of the uniform to donate matter? Do the badges, troop numbers or other things need to be removed first?

No, it is not necessary to remove the patches, unless you want to keep them. The age of the official Boy Scout uniform does not matter either, as long as it is in good condition.
