Hike the 2018 Pony Express 50/20

Join Scouts and families from all over Utah in Porter Rockwell District’s 2018 50/20 hike. The 50/20 is the ultimate hiking challenge – 50 miles in only 20 hours. This is an overnight event, from August 24-25.

This event is an ideal opportunity for Scouts to complete the “roadblock” 20-mile hike that is needed for the Eagle required Hiking Merit Badge – a hike that few units otherwise conduct. Or, take this opportunity to simply challenge yourself and hike on your own, with some friends or as a family.

If this sounds like the adventure for you, REGISTER HERE.

What Does Registration Include?

Not only does registration include the event of a lifetime, participants will also receive a t-shirt to commemorate their achievement. Drinks and refreshments will be included throughout the hike as well, in order to support hikers through the end.

Registration for this event is $25.

Online registration ends Thursday, August 23 at 5:00 p.m. However, if you miss this deadline, you may still register at the event, but you must come early to do so.

Shorter Distance Hikes

In addition to the traditional 50 mile/20 hour hike, this event offers multiple other long-distance hikes, like 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 miles, which take place over local trails. Shorter distance hikes are also available for those who are interested, like the 5, 10, or 15-mile hikes.

The Schedule

Friday, August 24:

  • Meet at Westlake LDS Seminary Building, 294 Pony Express Parkway, Saratoga Springs
  • 5:30 pm – Early registration
  • 6:00 pm – Hike starts

Saturday, August 25:

  • 2:00 pm – Approximate time hike ends

What to Bring

Boy Scouts of America Medical Form Parts A and B

Other Supplies:

Hat, sunscreen, hiking shoes-comfortable and sturdy, water, snacks, cell phone, etc.

Be a Volunteer

Not up to hiking through the night? These are “supported hikes,”  which means there are various stops along the way that provide food, drink, first aid, encouragement and bail-out options. That means volunteers are needed to attend these support stations.

So, we are looking for units that can attend and provide logistic support at specific locations along the course; i.e. approximately every 5 to 7 miles to ensure a support station is available for hikers needing resupply, rest or medical assistance.

To volunteer, please contact Bryan Bassett at 801-819-8826.

Wether you attend the 50/20 as a hiker or as a volunteer, this is bound to be one fun adventure.

This was a great event. Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped along the way. My 14 year old son and I ran it in the 11 hour range. The course is fairly flat and the full moon was amazing. No matter how far you go it is a great opportunity to push yourself and learn from the experience.

The encouragement at the aid stations really helped motivate us to keep going. Thanks again!
