Prayers for Year’s End

praying cub scoutsEnding of the Year Prayer (for your last Scout meeting)

This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.

O, Great Spirit and Creator of us all, we recognize that indeed it is you that has made us and not we ourselves.

Our Father who art in heaven, we are humbled to come again to you on this the closing of one year and the beginning of a new one. We rejoice in all that has been accomplished, the successes that have brightened our hope, and the failures that have reminded us of our dependency upon thee.

And now as we look into this new year with hindsight and great expectations, we once again ask that you would give us vision and direction and with the strength of these mountains, the awakening breeze as it come from its wintry lay, inspire us to be more than we are or see, and my you take each of us from the least to the most respected and my we find new resolve to do our best.

We confess that we have claimed at times for our own this ministry of Scouting when we know all along that it is by your mercy that we are what we are.

Now, Great Spirit, be with each participant this evening, those who are to lead and those who are to follow, those who are to receive and those who are to give, and when we leave this place, may we go with a new awareness of the tie that binds us together in this noble endeavor we call Scouting. And as we go, may this light reflect our honor as we strive to keep it clean.

Great Spirit, may you be pleased with our effort and smile on our gathering, for it it’s in your name we pray, amen.

New Year’s Blessing

God bless thy year,
Thy coming in, thy going out,
Thy rest, thy travelling ’bout,

The rough, the smooth,
The bright, the dear;
God bless thy year.

We Begin

God, we begin a new year well fed and warmly clothed, among friends, and with more things than we need to keep us healthy and happy. We are the lucky ones. We pray for others who are not so fortunate and, more important, we want to work for them. Help show us the way to make our community, our country, and our world a place where all people enjoy good food and shelter, good friendships and peace–where all people have a fair share of the things they need to be healthy and happy and truly alive.
